John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit. Their experiments with superconducting circuits showed that quantum effects can occur not only in individual particles but also in much larger systems. This research helped lay the foundations for quantum technologies, including superconducting quantum computers.
